FROM WIKIPEDIA: Street photography defined

  • Street photography is conducted for art or enquiry

  • Features unmediated chance encounters and random incidents within public places

  • Can focus on people and their behavior in public, thereby also recording people's history

  • Can be seen as an extension of the flâneur, an observer of the streets

  • May or may not necessitate presence of a street or even urban environment

  • Framing and timing can be key aspects with aim of capturing decisive or poignant moments

  • Doesn't exclusively feature people within the frame, but traces left by humanity that say something about life

  • Images might be absent of people, and instead show an object or environment where the image projects a decidedly human character in facsimile or aesthetic

   Well-known photographer Roger Ballen says:
"I have been taking photographs for over fifty years and during this time I developed a style that is referred to as Ballenesque. My aesthetic evolved, layer by layer, predominantly inspired by the images I created. It takes time, hard work, commitment, imagination to find the path, the road that takes you to a place that you never expected to be, where ones work genuinely stands out from anything else."
