DARK HORSE IN THE RACE
STREET PHOTOGRAPHY is a genre of photography that records everyday life in public places, its very publicness enabling the photographer to take candid pictures of strangers, often without their knowledge.
Unlike photojournalists who function as reporters, street photographers often have no social purpose in mind...their goal being to isolate and capture moments in time that might otherwise go unnoticed.

A 'street photograph' becomes a 'street portrait' when a subject grants permission to be photographed, either casually or posed by the photographer.
STREET PORTRAITS can be captured in any public place, such as a street, event, planned gathering, or even at a seashore or forest trail. There is an authentic element to street images...people or actions met serendipitously along the way. In street portraits, the photographer asks people for permission to take their photograph. Street portraits, such as the ones above, may be highly edited or even composited from two or more images.
PHOTOJOURNALISM is the collecting, editing, and presenting of news material for publication that employs images to tell a news story, either still or video images.

Unlike street photography that can be manipulated in any way, ethics of photojournalism demand that the work be both honest*, impartial and unedited whilst telling the story in strictly journalistic terms. Like a writer, a photojournalist is a reporter, but must often make decisions instantly with photographic equipment while exposed to obstacles (e.g., physical danger, weather, crowds, physical access).

*Photojournalistic images must not be edited beyond cropping and adjusting exposure. Nothing can be added or removed.
